WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT BAPTISM?
Baptism is an act of our obedience and a testimony of our faith. Before Jesus was taken up to heaven, He commanded that the disciples go to all the nations baptizing new believers in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There are many scriptures highlighting the importance and significance of baptism throughout the New Testament. There are three below, as well as references to many others. For a new believer being baptized, these scriptures are helpful in understanding the importance of the Lord’s command for baptism.
Matthew 28:18-20 says, “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
We believe that the believer’s baptism is an act of our obedience and a testimony of our faith. Before Jesus was taken up to heaven He commanded that the disciples go to all nations baptizing new believers in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist at the beginning of His ministry. At this time, the Father revealed, that Jesus was His Son and the Holy Spirit landed on Jesus. Jesus marks a new era of baptism, transforming baptism from being a baptism of repentance to a baptism of the Holy Spirit as well. (see also: Luke 3:20-22)
Acts 2:38-41 says, “Peter replied, ‘Repend and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.’” And, with many other words he warned them, and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted hi message were baptized and about three thousand
were added to their number that day.
Throughout the book of Acts, people who receive the gospel message, becoming believers, are then baptized. It is an act of obedience on the behalf of the believer, proclaiming to others, that they have died to their old nature and been raised as a new creation because of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Romans 6:4 says, “We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
